While most people associate Rust with summer and storks, the small free town on Lake Neusiedl is also well worth a visit in winter, especially from 21 November to 21 December. During this period, the town centre transforms into a magical Advent mile that guarantees festive cheer. And right in the middle of it all: the Elfenhof Vinothek.
Festively decorated trees, twinkling lights as far as the eye can see, and the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine in the air. For an entire month before Christmas, a romantic holiday atmosphere settles over the historic lanes and townhouses of Rust. The reason: the Ruster Adventmeile.
Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holiday from 21 November to 21 December, the medieval streets come alive between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The programme ranges from the opening concert featuring the Rust primary school choir and the 1st Rust Men’s Choir to the soulful finale with “Body & Soul” on the last Advent Sunday.
The aroma of hot chocolate, savoury cheese specialities and steaming soup served in bread bowls fills the streets. During these weeks, Rust becomes a celebration for all the senses. And starting at 5 p.m., live concerts take place on the Rathausplatz.
Three Advent Markets in Historic Streets
The Ruster Adventmeile spans three central locations. On Rathausplatz, classic Advent market stalls offer mulled wine, regional delicacies and artisan crafts. A nostalgic children’s carousel brings charm and delight to Conradplatz.
At the Kremayrhaus (Conradplatz 2), 21 exhibitors present their creations, from handcrafted art and natural cosmetics to hand-painted Christmas ornaments and nativity scenes.
The Ruster Zechkeller (Conradplatz 4) features regional treats and additional exhibitors offering Advent wreaths, handcrafted jewellery and festive decorations.
The Elfenhof Vinothek – Your Haven Amid the Festivities
Located at Josef-Haydngasse 2, right in the heart of the Advent festivities, the Elfenhof Vinothek opens its doors once again this year. While the Advent markets outside bustle with activity, the vinothek provides a special place of peace and enjoyment.
Here, you can take your time exploring Elfenhof wines. Bathed in warm light and surrounded by the magic of the season, you may even find a moment of quiet reflection before stepping back into the lively Christmas atmosphere of the streets.
Arrive Relaxed
On Saturdays and Sundays, a shuttle bus runs from Vienna (Opera House) via Eisenstadt to Rust and Mörbisch in cooperation with Blaguss.
The free Christkindl-Express connects Klingenbach, Eisenstadt, Rust and Mörbisch on all Advent weekends – perfect for a relaxed holiday stroll through the region.
